Last night Brian and I had just sat down on the couch when we heard Roland's voice from the stairs. He had snuck out of his room to tell us, "I've got a surprise to show you." His grin was enormous.
My first thought was slight panic as I wondered what concoction he and his sister had built in their bedroom undetected by us. False alarm, he just wanted to show us that he had discovered the full moon had come out from hiding behind some clouds. So he, Brian and I went out on the deck and admired it. We can't help but be moved by his fondness of the moon. We've always enjoyed spotting it. The rareness of it makes it seem a bit magical. It's been interesting explaining the properties, role and location of the moon to him over the last four years, but a good benchmark in evaluating his comprehension of the world.
Tonight, Roland asked if the moon was hidden behind the clouds again, and I told him it was. Aria kept asking, "Where are you moon?" and finally Roland - a bit frustrated - turned to her and said, "It's up there! You just can't see it because it's behind the clouds!" Kinda made me laugh because he could understand the relationships and she, still wonderfully unaware, just wanted to know why the glowing ball was hiding.
When we do see a full moon on a clear sky we howl. Random, but nothing is more funny than watching Aria howl!
