The Great Sand Pile

Brian and I were trying to decide what type of sand box Roland could enjoy in the backyard. It was pretty funny how far we took it. (Warning: that's what you get when you have parents that are designers and builders.) Between types of lids, how many bags of sand, location of box related to sun/shade, what type of wood, bottom drainage base, etc. it got quickly confusing and out of hand. While looking out back at a slab of Tennessee granite in the backyard that is just close enough to the surface to prevent any grass from growing we realized a perfect solution. Since that area was already Roland's favorite place to lay around in the dirt and play with trucks, just drop in a couple bags of good sand and tada! Instant beach! It's been a huge hit as you can see, and we've enjoyed many great hours out playing with our construction vehicles. And the threat of cats using the sand as a litter box? Are you kidding? What cat would be that suicidal? (See Zeus relaxing under the hammock a few yards away...) More photos here.
