Volcano Day!

So with the kids out of school for the summer Brian and I crafted a simple calendar of events and themes to keep things fun, easy and educational. (And to preserve our sanity - schedules for the kids are crucial.)

Today was Volcano Day! (You just have to say that with mondo emphasis)

I made the kids fresh fruit salad, whole grain waffle 'volcanos' for breakfast (fresh fruit piled around a half banana, covered with waffle triangles). The 'lava' is an extra-special treat: whipped cream. And not the organic kind - the kind in a can that you can spray like streams of lava all over the volcano. And let me tell you, when I set the plates down in front of the kids - you would have thought I was handing them the sun and moon. I got a chorus of oh's and ah's. Delighted giggles and wow's, and then silence. Ah...heaven...as those two plowed through their volcanoes with glee!

(Wednesday's experiment was food coloring and its effect on celery stalks. Here's the supplies for the volcanoes!)

The kids watched a few videos I found on volcanoes. (Wonderpolis) What makes them, how they erupt, how to make them, etc. I bought baking soda and vinegar and Brian constructed a great volcano in the sandbox from an old bubble wand container. He let the kids take turns pouring the vinegar, causing the volcano to 'erupt'. Very cool! Though Aria did try to eat the baking soda...

I think we'll have Volcano Day again this summer - or at least when I can be there. :) Tomorrow is Mas Tacos and Library day. They'll be visiting the library for a puppet show with Jack and Kristi, meeting me for lunch at Mas Tacos and playing in the backyard. Summer fun with Super Dad and Frien!
