Bay Lake Bound
When I explain to people we drive to Minnesota each summer - 1000 miles in a straight shot north - I agree with them that we are crazy. But maybe I throw around the term "crazy" about us too often, because we're not. It's more than that, it's genetic. (And more importantly we know from experience everything about road travel is better when the kids are asleep.)
Both Brian and I grew up with parents who did the exact same thing. Brian's family drove from San Diego to Bay Lake every summer. My parents jaunts carried us to the Outer Banks, Washington, D.C., and the Everglades. This is why when we say things like, "Yeah, we're just going to drive overnight." and no one in our families flinch. It's a given. And it's super-exciting. Those are some unforgettable moments of "Yeah, we did that." that refuel our adventure thirsty tanks.
So this afternoon we'll pack the car, hug the dogs one more time, remind Evan to eat something more than pizza and cereal, and hopefully get on the road at 6. Likely 7. We should arrive at the lake by 11 AM if everything goes smooth. But back to crazy, it got me thinking where else could we drive to if we went in a different direction? Turns out some pretty cool places. If we went north east we could be in Toronto in just 14 hours, NYC in 15, Montreal in 19. Awesome. If we went south we could be tiptoeing across the pristine blanket of broken shells on Naples beach in 15 hours. Going west is another story. We'd barely make it the Colorado border in the same travel time, or head southwest and hit Amarillo. Cool. Either way, this is good prep for driving back to San Diego.
Thanks again Nana/Bob for the DVD player - it's a life saver! Miss you all and can't wait to see our Throop-Vaughn family!
Be back soon, El

Ellie & Brian,
By now, you should be almost there. Hope the drive was as exciting and as crazy as you'd hoped. I have such fond memories of the three road trips I've taken between Atlanta & LA (each time, a different route). Granted, none were with kids, but all were still great trips.
Bon Voyage!
Ben
